Driving Towards A Brighter Future: Charles' Story

Driving Towards A Brighter Future: Charles' Story

Before Charles came to Mission Possible, he had taken a break from work to focus on his recovery. He had stopped drinking and smoking, and was really prioritizing his mental health and building a solid foundation for his sobriety.

One day, when Charles was feeling strong and ready to work again, he saw a Mission Possible team doing graffiti removal. This piqued his interest and he reached out to us to learn more.

He enrolled in the Employment Readiness Program and eventually joined the Clean Team, working to keep the streets in the Downtown Eastside clean by picking up litter and needles. Charles shares, “When I first joined the Clean Team, it was all new for me, so I was just doing my best to have an excellent work ethic. [Landing at MP] just made me feel like I'm on the right path and that I'm doing something right.”

As a member of the Clean Team, Charles appreciated the chance to contribute and be a part of a team. He enjoyed the company of his colleagues and found the managers to be kind and encouraging. Charles received compliments on his work ethic and it inspired him to keep focused on his goals and recovery.

One of Charles’ ambitious goals was to obtain a full driver’s license. He shares, “It was important to me, for myself to have the freedom to drive, and also to show my family that I'm doing well and I'm focusing on goals and then I'm achieving them to show them that I'm on the right path.”

He got tips from his supervisors and coach, and obtained his L while on the Clean Team. At the same time, Charles felt encouraged to expand his skills, and decided to pursue a MP Maintenance pressure washing contract.

While he waited for his N test, Charles showed incredible growth and work ethic on the pressure washing team. His hard work paid off when he passed his N test, and was hired on as a permanent employee of MP Maintenance.

This fall, Charles will celebrate two years as a permanent employee of MP Maintenance. He recalls his first time driving one of Mission Possible’s vehicles, “I was, very, very, very happy. I'm proud of myself.” Charles now drives an MP vehicle every day, leading crews to their different work locations throughout the city of Vancouver.

Charles has achieved his goals of acquiring his driver’s license and maintaining his sobriety. His mental health is strong and he exercises regularly to help him stay healthy and focused.

Today he shares, “I’m just really grateful and humble to be part of such an amazing team.”

We’re grateful to have Charles on the Mission Possible team too!
