A Healing Journey: Kim’s Story
“I think we should be lifting people up, not putting them down. Everybody deserves another chance in life.” - Kim Park, MP Neighbours Associate
As a leader at MP Neighbours, Kim is making a difference.
Many of you heard from Kim Park over the Christmas season as we shared her journey at Mission Possible.
Today we wanted to give you a brief update on the inspiring progress Kim has made in her life and the difference she’s making in the community.
It’s been three months since Kim was promoted to a leadership position at MP Neighbours, our social enterprise that works to provide tailored community safety services in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
As a leader at MP Neighbours, Kim makes the schedule, trains new team members, and helps facilitate the bi-weekly Neighbours meeting which occasionally includes presenting on educational topics.
She recently shared with us: “It’s given me more confidence that I’m able to do more. It’s given me more opportunities to show what I’ve learned and my skills.”
Thanks to support from the MP community and the training she received in the Employment Readiness Program, Kim has been empowered to build this new career and create a more stable life for herself and her family. She no longer fears being evicted or unable to pay rent.
During the recent blistering cold, Kim was grateful to be able to check in on folks and help them find warming shelters. It means a lot to know she’s helping people and making our city a friendlier, safer place. Kim wants to you know:
“It makes me feel good. It makes me feel like I’m appreciated and respected that somebody is giving me that opportunity to do more. The work keeps me grounded as well, and makes me appreciate what I have, because I’ve seen there are so many people in need out there.”
Kim hopes to move from a part-time to a full-time role with MP Neighbours in 2024. Kim also has a partner of two years who is serving in the U.S. military, and she’s hoping to welcome him home this year. In addition, she looks forward to decluttering her home and seeing more of her young granddaughter.
Thank you for empowering Kim and others to sharpen their skills, build their confidence, work towards a satisfying career, and make an impact in the community.
